Introduction to Italian Literature

Course goals

De cursus biedt een overzicht van de historische ontwikkeling van de Italiaanse literatuur vanaf de Middeleeuwen tot heden. De studenten krijgen inzicht in de verschillende genres en poëtica’s, en worden bekend met de basisbegrippen van de literatuurwetenschap. Ze zullen ook in staat zijn literaire teksten te analyseren (formeel, structureel, stilistisch) en interpreteren.

Content

Italian literature - with writers such as Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio, Ariosto, Machiavelli and Vittoria Colonna, Leopardi, Pirandello and Elsa Morante - is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the most influential within the Western canon. During the lectures, students will be introduced to the most famous masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the present, the different movements, themes and literary genres. Moreover, a historical overview is given for each period to place these texts in their broad social and cultural context. The seminars focus on a modern author and, on the basis of close reading, competences are acquired to analyse a few poems formally and substantively and to present the results orally.

The lectures are in Dutch and English; the textbook is in English, the primary texts are in Italian. 

The competences acquired in this course form the basis for taking the course Analisi e Critica del testo and the courses of the literary direction in depth.
