Course goals

At the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
(1)     answer questions regarding Old Irish grammar
(2)     translate an Old Irish text of moderate difficulty within a limited amount of time
(3)     identify the most common metres in early Irish poetry
(4)     identify different kinds of rhyme and poetic ornamentation, e.g. alliteration, aicill-rhyme
(5)     answer questions about different genres of medieval Irish literature treated during class
(6)     digitally parse Old Irish as part of the Parsed Corpus of Old Irish
(7)     effectively use electronic resources for locating relevant primary and secondary literature

Content

In this course, students will expand the knowledge of Old Irish grammar acquired during Old Irish 1. They will continue reading prose texts, increasing their proficiency at translation, and in addition will learn to translate poetic genres, as well as recognise metre, rhyme and ornamentation. Students will receive further instruction with regard to literary genres, backgrounds and literary analysis. There will also be an introduction to Digital Humanities, by participating in the Parsed Corpus of Old Irish Database and by learning to use the online Dictionary of the Irish Language.
 

Additional information

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you are:

  • a student in the BA Celtic Languages and Culture.
  • a student in the BA TCS enrolled in the hoofdrichting Taalkunde.
  • a student in the BA TCS enrolled in the hoofdrichting Middeleeuwen en Renaissance.
  • an exchange student and meet the course’s entry requirements.

In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list. 


Early Exit option for international exchange students (5 EC)
 
Exchange students who are required to return to their home university before January, are allowed to choose an Early Exit option for this course. The Early Exit option means that students can finish the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 EC for the course. Students must make arrangements with the course coordinator at the start of the course.
