Middle Welsh 3

Course goals

(1) To gain an ability to translate and interpret medieval Welsh texts containing a higher grade of difficulty across a wide range of genres
(2) Maintaining and extending the knowledge of medieval Welsh  grammar acquired in Middle Welsh 1 and 2.
(3) Having practised and successfully written an academic paper.
(4) Having practised and given an oral presentation (as feedback moment for the paper).

Content

Several medieval Welsh texts (narrative literature, poetry, legal, historiographical and hagiographical) will be translated and analysed. The texts shall be discussed against their literary and cultural background. Selected scholarly articles on medieval Welsh language and culture shall be discussed and academically evaluated

This course is part of the specialisation "Interpretation and reinterpretation of medieval Celtic Texts" as well as "Language contact and language change in Celtic".
