Course goals

This is a course in "logical literacy" for AI students. You will:
  1. get a broad overview of the logical methods used in AI research
  2. understand how and why these methods work and what their limits are
  3. learn how to apply these methods in specific problem domains within AI
  4. acquire general logical competences to evaluate inferences

Content

N.B.: The course is EXCLUSIVELY open to students of the Artificial Intelligence program, LAS students, TCS students, minor students in Artificial Intelligence, and pre-master students in Artificial Intelligence.

Logic is the study of correct reasoning, of what are good and bad inferences. In a standard introduction to logic, you familiarize yourself with the basic definitions and results of modern logical theory. But this course is not your standard introduction to logic.

Human-centered Artificial Intelligence, UU-style, aims at the at the understanding, artificial replication, and possible enhancement of human intelligence. Since reasoning is a hallmark of human intelligence, this makes logic a core discipline of AI research. At the same time, logicians have developed a series of advanced tools for the modeling and analysis of reasoning, ranging from natural language processing techniques over knowledge bases to algorithms for automated reasoning. From this perspective, logic is an important auxiliary discipline for AI.

In this course, you'll learn about logical theory by studying its applications in AI research. So, you'll both learn the mathematical definitions, like that logical consequence, _and_ you'll get your hands dirty by trying out tools, like the proof assistant LEAN.

This course overlaps with FI1V19005 – Logic for Philosophers and FI2V23005 – Logic and Language. If you are studying AI, you must compulsorily follow KI1V13001 and you may not count FI1V19005/FI2V23005 towards your program.
