Course goals

Students will:
  • gain a thorough knowledge of the key literary and artistic movements of the 20th and 21st century;
  • be able to place them in their historical, cultural, and theoretical context;
  • be able to communicate orally and in written form about these issues in a critical and comparative manner in appropriate academic language, using specific literary critical terminology, and present their work according to established norms in the field.

Content

The fourth and final course in the survey of literary history covers the period from 1914 to the present. Students will be introduced to the main literary and artistic movements of this turbulent period, from modernism to current developments. We will read a selection of poetry, prose, and drama, and consider the intersections between literature and other media. In addition to the aesthetic and poetic aspects of the different genres and movements, the course emphasizes the relationship between literature and society, politics, and history. We read both primary and secondary texts in order to trace the parallel trajectories of literature and literary theory over the period.
