Course goals

- Ability to place questions of resistance and dissent within diverse cultural, socio-political, and historical contexts;
- Connect the issues of dissent embodied in literary texts to related questions in fields outside literature;
- Speak and write critically about dissent and resistance as it is related to aesthetics and politics, both at a general theoretical level and with reference to specific examples.

This is the fourth course in the specialisation Literature in Conflict.

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you are:

  • a student in the BA Literary Studies enrolled in the specialisation Literature in Conflict.
  • a student in the BA TCS enrolled in the hoofdrichting Moderne letterkunde.
  • an exchange student and meet the course’s entry requirements.

In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list. 


LAS and TCS students taking this course as part of the core curriculum of their major must complete a compulsory preparation course/assignment. For more information, see: https://tcs.sites.uu.nl/

Lingua Receptiva (Luistertaal)
This course is taught in English, but is also open to students who only have a receptive understanding of English (Lingua Receptiva). Such students have the option of completing written assignments (weekly responses, final paper) in Dutch. If you would like to make use of the Lingua Receptiva, please contact the course coordinator. Note that if you make use of Lingua Receptiva, this course will be registered as one of the elective modules of your programme. In this case, the course cannot count as a language-specific course within the major or minor part of your programme.
