Course goals

At the end of this course, students will:

  • be able to analyze literary texts through a set of key terms and concepts within the field of ‘postcolonial’ studies;
  • become familiar with a number of  postcolonial authors who engage with issues of aesthetics and politics;
  • become familiar with a set of critical and conceptual approaches to the interpretation of postcolonial texts.

Content

In this course we will study literatures from formerly colonised nations in their historical and cultural contexts. Each week, we will examine central concepts, questions, and debates in postcolonial studies and explore different geographic regions ((South) Africa, the Caribbean, India, South America, Australia). The course examines issues of race, gender, class, the violent legacies of slavery and colonialism through the lens of literary texts. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify and discuss key postcolonial authors and texts in their historical and cultural contexts, problematise central concepts within the field of postcolonial studies and engage with postcolonial reading and critical methods.
