Content
Theories and Concepts of Theatre, Dance, and Dramaturgy introduces students to a selection of theoretical concepts and approaches useful for the analysis and interpretation of recent trends and topics in the contemporary field of theatre, dance, and performance. We approach theories as conceptual lenses that allow us to identify or see things that might otherwise remain invisible and to challenge our received ways of seeing. We draw on concepts from outside theatre and performance studies, such as feminisms, affect theory, postcolonialism, and posthumanism, and consider the ways in which such concepts can be applied to theatre events -- but also how theatre events give form to concepts and embody new ways of knowing and being. In this way we bring theory and practice into dialogue.
The course trains skills of critically reading and presenting particular discourses and/or theoretical approaches, and choosing between theoretical lenses to generate new possibilities and insights for dramaturgical practice.
