Art and Society: Experimental Fieldwork

Course goals

• The objective of this course is the collective exploration of how fieldwork, as a methodology and as a set of tools, contributes to the exploration of Arts and Society topics.
• After the course, students
  • gain advanced knowledge of fieldwork research and its theoretical and practical elements in an interdisciplinary manner.
  • develop the ability to use creative methods to document and/or present findings in the field through experimentation and practice.

Content

In this course students explore creative research methods through an interdisciplinary lens, and study how to apply such methods to different causes of interest (for example, knowledge creation, community building, documentation and archiving, and political interventions). Types of field research covered in the course vary based on the expertise of teaching staff and guests, and may include ethnography, participatory observation methods, urban methods, etc. Students are encouraged to develop their methodological skills and critical awareness to apply research methods in various kinds of field sites, and to reflect on the methodological, political, and ethical issues arising out of such research engagements. Through the portfolio assignments, students are invited to develop their own projects and build upon their existing knowledge in the field of arts and society.

This course is an elective open to students in the MA Arts and Society, MA Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy and MA Applied Musicology. KUEM  and other students need to contact the course coordinator before enrolling. The entrance requirements for Exchange Students will be checked by International Office and the Programme coordinator. You do not have to contact the Programme coordinator by yourself.
