Course goals

This course is intended, first, for students to develop an overview and understanding of the phenomenon of platforms, streaming, and cultural production, as well as relevant critical cultural inquiries into digital technologies. Second, it aims to foster students' ability to analyze the mutual shaping of technology and society.
By the end of this course, students can:
  • Identify and understand platforms as computational, software-based systems.
  • Critically analyze the socio-economic and technical elements that shape these platforms.
  • Conduct a robust methodological analysis of a streaming video platform.
  • Define key concepts and assess relevant theories regarding platforms, data, and cultural production.

Content

The internet functions as a key distribution channel for cultural content, including ebooks, music, television series, and feature films. These platforms, which operate under various business models, are not neutral; they actively shape how content is produced, consumed, and interacted with.

This course will concentrate on platforms that specifically distribute audiovisual material, such as video-on-demand services (e.g., Netflix, Mubi) and social media platforms (e.g., YouTube, TikTok). We will explore the roles of these platforms, along with the role of data and algorithms, in the dynamics of audiovisual content production, distribution and consumption.

This course is open only to students enrolled in the MA Programme New Media & Digital Culture or the MA Programme Film and Television Cultures.


Transitional provisions:
This course is the equivalent for course MCMV22013: Platforms, Data & Cultural Production. 
If you've completed Platforms, Data & Cultural Production before, you cannot take the course MCMV25002 Platforms, Streaming & Cultural Production.
