Course goals

This course aims to allow students to:
A) analyze contemporary and historical case studies related to the body and embodiment;
B) explore multiple ways in which the body can become a subject of feminist and queer inquiry
C) discuss and interrogate the ways in which our own embodiment as researchers impinges on the work we read and do;
D) present convincing and compelling arguments in oral and written form.

Content

This course familiarizes students with conceptual and theoretical approaches to analyzing the body, embodiment, and the embodied subject, with particular attention to the place of the corporeal and the body politic across interdisciplinary fields including queer and feminist theory, transgender studies, settler colonial studies, critical race studies, political theory, and feminist Marxist theory.
The course examines how bodies are produced, governed, and contested through intersecting regimes of power. Topics may include (but are updated annually): technologies of power and their role in the production of gendered subjectivities and sexed bodies; the labor of social and biological reproduction under capitalism; biopolitics and necropolitics as modes of governing life and death; processes of racialization and bodily differentiation; and contemporary debates in transgender and disability politics, among others.
