Course goals
In this course students develop and practice advanced research skills for Media, Art and Performance Studies by examining and working with the tools to reflect on, and practice with, the steps involved in research design.
After completing this course students will have trained to:
-
- analyse existing research design and distil the components and steps involved in this project(s);
- reflect on the relationship between research perspectives and questions, research object(s), theoretical concept(s) and analytical approaches;
- improve reading and writing as advanced academic skills;
- assess and reflect on your personal development as an academic researcher;
- become (more) acquainted with the academic environment at Utrecht University;
- gained insights in career orientation with regard to pursuing a PhD within the area of Media, Art and Performance studies;
- know more about the possibilities and limitations of generative AI (GenAI) and be able to use it to responsibly generate new data.
Content
In this course you will develop and practice advanced research skills for Media, Art and Performance Studies by examining and working with the tools to reflect on, and practice with, the steps involved in research design. This Research Lab introduces a series of key concerns regarding working with methods and methodologies relevant for doing research within the field of Media, Art and Performance Studies. We will explore the relationship between our research objects and phenomena, our theoretical approaches and the concepts we use in our analyses. Peer-discussion and peer-feedback is an important part of the working format within this course. The course also includes an instruction on GenAi use. Students will be introduced to what GenAI is, how it can be used responsible and critically, and how to ensure self-responsibility over work based on version control, logbook and self-reflection.
In various working formats we will: 1) reflect on the status of our research objects and the concepts with which we analyze them, and practice making selections and delineating our own research objects; 2) examine the role of concepts in different types of analysis and experiment with this in relation to our own research objects by trying out some analytical approaches; 3) analyze the steps and components of academic research design; 4) practice reading and writing as advanced academic skills; 5) become (more) acquainted with the academic environment at Utrecht University.
Additional information
Career Orientation:
Developing practical research skills based on current developments within academic debates in relation to changing technologies, artistic practices and cultural dynamics within and in relation to the (professional) fields of media, art and performance.
