Emerging and Transforming Cultural Institutions

Course goals

After completing this course, the student will have:

• Acquire insight and knowledge about changes and transformations within institutions and cultural frameworks and how to reflect on these transformations and their implications.
• Demonstrate the use of relevant theoretical concepts for imagining and analyzing cultural and institutional transformation.

Content

This course engages with the conditions for cultural transformation, looking specifically at how institutions perform, what structures and ideologies they serve to reproduce or to challenge, and the role of artistic practice in imagining and realising transformation. We look at the emergence of new kinds of cultural institutions, some which operate at a more practical level, and others which are more conceptual or interventionist. We will explore examples of emerging practices and meet with people involved in them. We will take an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of institutional forms, as well as the imagining of new forms, by drawing on concepts and metaphors from a range of emergent fields in media, art and performance studies, and also exploring the ways in which instituting can itself be understood as a creative practice.
