An internship in the RMA is a valuable addition to the training of students as professional researchers. It allows them experience working as an embedded researcher, either within academia, within a research institute or external research project, or in the context of a professional organization or cultural institution. During the internship, students obtain the opportunity to develop their research skills in a professional (research) environment, to further develop their personal professional research identity, and to reflect on their role as a researcher in relation to the (wider) professional field. In the Research Master a clear research component should be the focus of the internship.
This research component can depart from two different perspectives. It can be designed and assigned as an internal research project at Utrecht University by the internship provider. In this case, students will conduct the research their main internship activity. The other possibility is that the professional practice of the internship provider is, in fact, the object of their research, for instance when the internship takes place at a cultural institution.

The internship consists of 10 full weeks of a work/research placement. It allows students to develop a professional research engagement within the RMA MAPS study program. Under supervision of a staff member (internal supervisor), they reflect on their own research proposal to identify organisations and institutions where they could conduct research that matches their own interests and aims. Before the start of the internship, students develop a work plan together with the supervisors (internal and at the organization/institution) that specifies in detail the activities, projects, and relevant research components of their internship. At the end of the internship, students compose a report detailing the research findings and academic reflections of the internship placement and, if relevant, how it connects to the thesis project the students aim to develop. The particular research perspective of their internship should be clear in the formulation of their research goals and main question(s) in their internship work plan, as well as the final internship report.

For more information, see MAPS student website > Curriculum > Internships https://students.uu.nl/en/hum/maps.

Additional information

Only open to students in the RMA MAPS who have completed at least 25 EC of the core curriculum and/or electives.

Career orientation:
In constructing a concrete research project, the internship provides an opportunity for the students to function and to develop work- and research-related skills in the setting of a professional organisation. It provides students with the possibility to directly engage with the working field or job market inside and outside of academia and enables them to establish a professional network.

Course registration
The HUM Internship Office will register you for the Internship course. Before they can do that, you need to take a number of steps yourself. You can find these steps on the internship page of your programme. The fixed registration periods for regular courses do not apply to internships. On the internship page you can find when you should have registered.
