Introduction to Film Studies (ENG)

Course goals

The specific learning objectives for this course are to:

• gain an elementary knowledge of different concepts and theories in film studies; 
• obtain an understanding of the cultural, industrial, and technological changes in film history; 
• develop basic skills in film analysis; 
• learn how to interpret historical and contemporary sources; 
• build a basic knowledge of cinema, identity, and the politics of representation.

 The course also trains the following general academic skills:

• systematic and critical study of texts; 
• gathering, processing and analyzing data and reporting research results in accordance with scholarly methods; 
• planning work and working together in teams; 
• learning to think with an appreciation for societal context; to situate information in a broader cultural/social context. 

Content

This course provides an overview of key approaches in film studies, exploring film as an art form, an economic product, a social practice, and an object of theoretical reflection. Through lectures and mandatory film screenings, students will be introduced to central concepts for studying topics such as the film industry, film form, film genres, and stardom. In seminars, students will develop their film analysis skills individually and collaboratively.

- are an exchange student and meet the course’s entry requirements
In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list.

A Maximum of 8 exchange students will be admitted to this course.
