Content

This course provides an overview of key concepts and theories in the study and analysis of television, with a particular emphasis on their relevance in the post-television era. Each week, the lecture discusses current television phenomena, addressing transformations such as from broadcasting to streaming, from scheduled programming to algorithmic recommendations, and from domestic viewing to portable consumption. It introduces concepts such as flow, liveness, and cultural forum which are subsequently studied in greater depth during the seminars through the close reading of key theoretical texts. Following this, students independently apply these concepts to analyse television programmes and other media phenomena. Through this process, students develop analytical approaches to (post) television based on theoretical frameworks.

This course is part of Core Profile 2 of the BA-programme “Media and Culture” and builds on historical and theoretical knowledge gained in Core Profile 1. It offers further training in academic (research) skills, with a special focus on analytical skills.

This course is only open to students of the BA Media and Culture in English. Core profile 2.
