Content

Media do not exist in isolation. They function in a network, creating and maintaining all sorts of relations with other media. This is all the more true for our contemporary, mediatized culture and society. This course introduces you to seminal theoretical discourses on the (inter)relations between media and arts, focusing on how these relations are affected by the socio-historical and technological contexts in which different media interact. We will address some of the main theoretical concepts that have been developed to distinguish, compare, and analyze differents kinds of arts and media relations. How are media combined or merged? How can the content or characteristics of media be transferred from one medium to another? How do media refer to and  (re-)mediate one another?  How do we define medium specificity and the borders or differences between media? We will not only focus on intermedial concepts but will also address some important recurring themes in academic discussions on media relations and mediation - from early modernist debates relating to the avant-gardes in the arts, to contemporary ones about platformization and computational media. These themes, topics and concepts are presented in the reading material for this course and will be discussed and elaborated upon in the lectures and seminars. Additionally, the course will introduce you to the Library Guide Media Studies. Through a series of modules this step by step LibGuide teaches you how to systematically search for academic literature and manage the results.
