Course goals

After completing this course, the student can:
  • Critically evaluate the complex relationships between music and technology.
  • Apply methodologies, theories and/or concepts for the analysis of musical objects to specific case studies.
  • Analyse traces and influences of technology in diverse musical works.
  • Understand the role of critical perspectives on technology in contemporary musicology.

Content

Music and technology are inextricably linked. This course explores some of these relationships through the study of technologies involved in the creation, dissemination, and reception of music. The technologies studied encompass a diverse range of musics and artistic practices and have engaged an equally varied array of methodologies for their study.

Some of our objects of study more readily fall under the banner of “music technology”, such as the keyboard and the gramophone. These prompt us to consider how musics and music practices are shaped by technology and/or shape the development of (music)technology. Others, such as the Nike+ Sport Kit and the electric vehicle, encourage us to consider how music is entangled in larger technological systems. Through close listening exercises, case studies, object analyses, and engagements with literature, this course asks us to think critically about music-technology relationships and their effects.
