Course goals
– The interaction of light with matter: polarization, scattering, absorption
– The propagation of light and how to manipulate this
– The generation of light, including in lasers
– The detection and imaging of optical signals
Content
Photons are important information carriers in research and technology, as well as in our every-day lives. This course will explore the basics of the generation, propagation, and detection of optical signals, as well as more advanced topics including lasers, long-distance transport through optical fibers, and the interaction of light with nanostructures. After completing this course the student should be able to understand and discuss the most important optical and photonic concepts used in fundamental science and technology.
The lectures are complemented with problem-class sessions, where relevant problems are solved using pen and paper and/or computer simulations. We typically invite one or two applied scientists for a lecture about cutting-edge applications of photonics in their field.

Additional information
Basic knowledge of a programming language such as Python is necessary for some of the problem-class and hand-in exercises. Several students without a physics background have successfully completed the course over the past years. However, they typically have to spend significant additional effort during the first few weeks to fill gaps in their mathematics skills.
