Course goals

By the end of the course, you are able to:

• describe the basic physical principles of common remote sensing techniques, and explain the properties of the visible, infrared and microwave parts of the electromagnetic spectrum,
• account for the basic technical principles of satellites,
• compare various platforms for remote analysis and image sensors,
• analyze remotely sensed data of Earth monitoring and evaluate results from such data,
• communicate results from your own remote sensing project in oral and written form,
• and reflect on which remote sensing techniques and analysis methods are suitable for different applications of monitoring with a focus on the Earth's surface processes.

Content

Modules:
  1. Remote sensing theory and image processing The sub-part treats basic physical principles and terminology for remote sensing and an overview of existing satellites and sensors. Further, remote sensing with image and non-image data processing, e.g., radiometric and geometric correction, image  classification methods, image classification and forward and retrieval for non-image data, are dealt with.
  2. Applications of remote sensing for studies of environment and society This part treats application of satellite based remote sensing in important application fields e.g., meteorology, land cover, sea surface height, cryosphere changes. Furthermore, use of satellite data is treated in different temporal and spatial resolution and analysis of data from different climate regions, is also included in this part of the course.
