Course goals
- Has hands-on experience with fieldwork within climate science.
- Is acquainted with the uncertainties involved these observations.
- Can reflect on the experiences during this fieldwork.
Content
During the field campaign, the fieldwork internship supervisor (see course enrolment) is responsible for the daily supervision. The fieldwork intership supervisor is also the contact point, unless stated otherwise, for all other practicalities around the fieldwork. The course coordinator is the first contact point in case discussion arises between students and the fieldwork internship supervisor.
The minimal workload of the course is 225 hours, thus 7.5 EC. If the time effort from participating the field campaign is more than 225 hours, the reporting by the students is light. If the field campaign time effort is less than 225 hours, the reporting will be more extensive. In all cases, the earned credits are 7.5 EC and the grading will be a pass / fail, so numberic grades with not be given. The course coordinator is responsible for the grading after consulting the fieldwork internship supervisor.
Course enrolment
All students will be put on a waiting list as a selection procedure applies for this course. This procedure for enrollment is as follows, as field campaigns are not regularly and every field campaign is different.
When a fieldwork campaing at which students can participate is upcoming, the course coordinator distribute a field campaign announcement, described below, among the students of Climate Physics and adjacent studies. This announcement is drafted by the principle investigator or another representative of the field campaign (from here on called fieldwork internship supervisor) and the course coordinator. After the distribution of the announcement, a defined limited time (2 to 4 weeks) is given for the students to register their interest via email to the course coordinator and to complete any additional documents. After the registration deadline, the fieldwork internship supervisor and course coordinator decide who of the registered students is eligible; if no selection criteria were set, all students that registered themselves are eligible. If there are more eligible students than places, students will be selected from this pool of eligible students at random, the others are put on a ranked waiting list. After this decision, all students are informed, and selected students must confirm their participation within a period provided in the decision notification.
The field campaign announcement contains: 1) a short description of the field campaign, the expected activites of the participating student(s), and the expected reporting by the student(s) after the field campaign to conclude this course. 2) How many students can participate and other conditions or requirements that apply. 3) If necessary, selection criteria for participation. 4) The costs that incur for the student to join the field campaign, such as for example (but not limited to) medical certification, safety-at-sea training and travel to the fieldwork locations. In all cases, the fieldwork itself does not incur a cost.
