Content

The course gives an introduction to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with a focus on collider physics and extreme forms of QCD matter found in neutron stars and the quark-gluon plasma. This includes an introduction to the Lagrangian and its colour factors, deep inelastic scattering and its implications for QCD parton showers and parton distribution functions inside a proton. The second part will consist of infrared and collinear safety, a jet definition, the running coupling of Yang-Mills theory and asymptotic freedom.

The last part of the course will focus on topics closely related to research at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and the GRASP Institute for Gravitational Waves and Subatomic Particle Physics. This includes the QCD phase diagram as a function of temperature and baryon density, relativistic hydrodynamics and its implications for neutron stars and the quark-gluon plasma.
