Course goals

At the end of the course, students should have:

  • Familiarized themselves with the state-of-the-art developments in topics of current physics research.
  • Become familiar with highly regarded research in physics, thus developing a critical attitude and recognizing the highest standards.
  • Kept abreast of novel theoretical methods and experimental tools, and work on developing skills needed to give professional advice on their impact on a range of applications.
  • Improved their command of professional English language through participation in a course taught in a foreign language.
  • Developed a better grasp of possible career routes inside and outside academia.

Content

We organize a biweekly speakers seminar at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, in which international experts will present contemporary research. The level is quite high, but as you progress in your Master's, you will become increasingly familiar with and confident in your understanding of the topics presented. In addition, we host regular alumni talks by former students of our program that have switched to non-academic careers. This will allow you to interact with these alumni and discuss their choices. Lastly, you will be asked to attend one career event of your choosing to ensure that you are well informed about the diversity in career options available to a Master's graduate of the Theoretical Physics program.

Students have to attend at least 18 Nico van Kampen colloquia, which feature academic speakers. In addition, they are required to attend three alumni talks and one labor-market activity. Information about the colloquium will be posted on the Blackboard for the course and on the website: https://web.science.uu.nl/ITF/Seminars/NvKampenColloquium.htm. Students enrolling in the program will be automatically added to the Blackboard Community, where a record of their attendance is maintained and all pertinent information on the course is maintained.
