Content

The course analyses the role of institutions in explaining the rise of capitalism and the emergence of so-called Open Access Orders (North, Wallis & Weingast, 2009). Ideas and theories from economics and philosophy are combined with law, political science, history, and other disciplines. The course takes a big-picture perspective, seeking to explain the origin and consequences of institutions such as the state monopoly of violence, the rule of law, and private property. Special attention is paid to the interaction between private companies, markets, institutions and the government.

The course combines economic models with philosophical reflection.
