Course goals

This course aims to develop citizenship, critical reflexivity, societal engagement as well as collaboration and communication skills. After completing the course, students are able to:
  • reflect critically on societal issues addressed by political, economic or civic society institutions and to design creatively proposals in the form of small-scale interventions;
  • commit to values that matter to them and learn to take responsibility for these commitments, and take initiatives to realize them in practice;
  • cooperate productively with others, to be a team player, who takes initiatives and is able to combine these with the ideas of others, and the ability to provide and receive feedback;
  • reflect upon their own progress, abilities and deficiencies in working in groups;
  • communicate about economic and political problems and institutional and non-institutional responses to these problems with audiences with various backgrounds;
  • contribute with these professional skills to society, driven by curiosity into complex social contexts and by an attitude of social responsibility.

Content

In PPE in Society, students are invited to bridge the gap between academia and the ‘outside world’. By interacting with societal partners and addressing problems from a systemic perspective, they will learn to engage with wicked questions that relate to their thematic track (Welfare state, Markets, Sustainable Futures and Democracy). In small groups, they will explore different perspectives from which a societal problem is defined and experienced by stakeholders before developing their own small-scale intervention that responds to some of the challenges or/and opportunities of the issue at stake. In doing so, students will be challenged to develop critical citizenship through reflexive practice.
