Course goals
- The students have an in-depth understanding of the concept of sustainable development and the role of objectives within the law from a historical perspective;
- The students are able to analyse the multi-layered and multidimensional nature of law and sustainable development in national, European and international law;
- The students understand how sustainable development have taken shape in national, European and international law based on its principles, and how these levels of governance interact with one another;
- The students can lead discussions and debates on issues related to the course’s themes;
- The students can effectively and efficiently work together in a group of students on a joint assignment.
Content
The aim of this course is to explain what sustainability is, and what it entails from a legal perspective in an EU context. It starts with an introduction of the core concept of sustainability and sustainable development, and provides insights into how sustainability policy and law operate within a multilayered and multidimensional legal order. It considers the role of sustainability and sustainability objectives in national, European and international law, and how these levels interact between one another. Finally, it discusses how the role of national actors in the implementation process takes shape, and where limitations or pitfalls lie in light of sustainable development.
