The course Advanced EU Competition Law and Economics I (‘Competition I’, RGMUIER047) covers the fundamental aspects of the law and economics behind EU competition law and policy on a graduate level.

Both legal aspects and economic analysis and principles are covered in a comprehensive and integrated manner, which is key to understanding competition law. Competition I covers the basic concepts of competition law and economics (undertaking, institutions, goals of competition law, market definition, market power), as well as the law and economic behind Article 101 and Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU)—which deal with anticompetitive agreements and abuses of a dominant market position.

An basic understanding of EU law, (micro)economics, and certain quantitative methods is required. Support and self-assessment material on the required background knowledge will be provided at the start of Competition 1.
