Course goals
After this course:
- The students have knowledge and understanding of the different forms of cross-border crime, their structure, activities and the motivations of actors involved.
- The students are able to explain a cross-border crime related phenomenon from a theoretical perspective.
- The students are able to analyse and critically reflect on the different approaches to tackle, respond, control or prevent cross-border crime activities.
- The students are able to apply theoretical knowledge on transnational organized crime in a particular ‘case study’, and to report on it both orally and in written form.
Content
This course consists of lectures and seminars.
Provisional 9 lectures:
1. Transnational Organized Crime: an introduction
2. History of organized crime: USA and The Netherlands
3. Comparative mafia’s: forms and structures of organized crime
4. Human trafficking (definitions, forms, trends and dilemmas)
5. Illegal Drugs Trade and Drugs Policies
6. Mobility, migration and organized crime
7. Art and organized crime
8. Nexus Terrorism – Organized crime
9. Money laundering and underground banking
