Course goals

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe basic structure, reactivity, and function of the four main classes of biomolecules;
2. Compare the different types of non-covalent interactions to analyze the relevance of each on the structure and assembly of macromolecules of biological interest and their complexes;
3. Support the role that regulatory mechanisms of protein-ligand binding (including cooperativity and allostery) have on the protein functions, by use of examples;
4. Explain the central dogma at the molecular level;
5. Derive the Michaelis Menten kinetics equation starting from its axioms;
6. Distinguish between different types of enzyme inhibition and regulation, starting from kinetic data;
7. Describe the shared chemical principles of metabolic processes;
8. Discuss key molecular events of basic cellular processes, and weigh the relevance of kinetics and thermodynamics in their physiological outcomes;
9. Apply good laboratory practices (such as following safety and working requirements, documenting wetlab work);
10. Interpret and use an experimental protocol to execute common techniques in biochemistry;
11. Critically analyze their own experiments in writing.
