Course goals
- Develop deep understanding of protein biophysics, theory and hands on experience of protein characterisation
- Familiarise with available techniques to characterise proteins with critical understanding of advantages and disadvantages of each
- Develop the skills to design and execute experiments to analyse proteins concentration, size, stability and aggregation.
- Develop the skills to design and execute experiments to label proteins and analyse biomolecular interactions.
- Practice writing a short manuscript to report lab results
Content
This course aims in providing deep understanding of protein biophysics with an emphasis on hands-on experience making use of the instrumentation in the protein research centre: https://www.uu.nl/en/research/protein-research-centre
Topics covered in the course includes: protein biophysics (size, stability and aggregation); Biomolecular interactions; Protein labelling.
The students will learn about the following methods and technologies: fluorescence anisotropy, size exclusion chromatography, microscale thermophoresis (MST), Flow Induced Dispersion Analysis (FIDA), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and nano differential scanning fluorimetry (nDSF)
