Course goals

The course offers the student an advanced understanding of the concepts of organometallic chemistry, with a focus on transition metal chemistry. At the end of the course, the student will be able to have insight in the structure and reactivity of organometallic compounds that contain a transition metal and are able to predict these; relate the structure and reactivity of organometallic compounds; use and include these aspects in reaction mechanisms; design/recognize/predict general organometallic synthetic routes and apply these insights in the use of organometallic compounds as homogeneous catalysts in various organic reactions. In addition, the student will be able to formulate a research question on the basis of the existing literature, outline a research plan, and defend it in front of peers.

Content

The lectures of the course follows the contents of the Crabtree book and include additional relevant topics. Selected topics are:

Concise Introduction in Coordination Chemistry and Organometallic Chemistry
Ligand types:
- Metal Alkyls, Aryls, and Hydrides,
- Carbonyl and Phosphine Complexes
- Complexes of π-Bound Ligands
How to study a reaction mechanism?
Elementary steps:
- Oxidative Addition and Reductive Elimination
- Insertion and Elimination
- Nucleophilic and Electrophilic Addition and Abstraction
Metal-Ligand Multiple Bonds
Asymmetric Catalysis
Polymerization Catalysis
Homogeneous Electrocatalysis
Non-noble metal catalysis

In parallel with the lectures, each student will write a research proposal on a relevant topic. Students will then act as reviewers for their peers and provide feedback on their proposals. Finally, each student will defend their proposal in a short presentation followed by questions. Details about the proposal are found in a separate document.
