Course goals

The course aims are:

  1. An advanced understanding of the architecture and complexity of organic molecules from a synthetic and mechanistic perspective (advanced retro-syntheses)
  2. Insight in advanced models and tools to identify, analyse and translate complexity into a series of key operations enabling the synthesis and construction of complex organic molecules by rational design
  3. A basic understanding of molecular modelling and computational tools that can be applied to rationalize how complex molecules can be constructed.

Content

To provide the students with state-of-the-art knowledge of interest for the construction of complex organic molecules and architectures. Examples of systems of relevance for advanced catalysis, the material sciences and the life sciences will be discussed and studied in detail. Intimately related to these objectives is the introduction of the students to advanced models required for the planning of complex multi-step syntheses (strategies), the interpretation of experimental data, the elucidation of underlying reaction mechanisms, stereochemical consequences, etc.

Advanced Organic Synthesis is together with Organometallic the preferred course for students who are interested in research in the Organic Chemistry and Catalysis group.
