Internship

Course goals

At the end of the internship, the student:
 

• has a realistic idea of the career opportunities after graduating, and of the skills that they need to successfully start a career.
• displays a professional and academic work attitude that enables them to work independently in a highly competitive labour market;
• is able to indicate the relevance of their own contributions for the solutions and problems in their field of specialization (nanomaterials, chemistry, sustainability, science, etc.), where possible from a societal point of view.
• is able to reflect critically upon their own contribution in their chosen field of specialization from a societal perspective.
• is able to function effectively in a multidisciplinary team of experts working in the chosen

area of specialization.

• is able to discuss, in spoken and written English the outcome of the internship project.

Content

An elective internship of 15 to 30 EC can be chosen as (part of) the secondary electives.
The internship will be executed outside the research groups affiliated with the programme (Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science and Institute of Sustainable and Circular Chemistry) in a field in which the student wants to pursue a career. This can be an industrial research internship, academic research internship, research at an independent research institute, but doesn’t necessarily have to be research related. If the student wants to pursue a career in consultancy, policy making/advising, scientific communication, etc., then that is possible as well, provided that the content of the internship is scientific in nature and a staff member from Utrecht University is willing to act as examiner.
Note: Students can only start their internship soon as the mandatory, primary elective courses and the research project have been finished.  

The student is assessed according to the following criteria:
 

• Process (project execution and management): 50% 
• Presentation: 17%
• Report: 33%
