Storytelling in Society
Beschrijving
Course goals
The objectives of this course are to acquire sound knowledge of a number of key issues in the field of narratology, in particular studying the structures and functions of stories; the competence to think critically about the theory and practice of storytelling in different periods and parts of society; and the ability to read, analyse and interpret a number of "strong stories" (literature, music, film, advertising, comics and new media)from a transnational and transmedial perspective.Content
The course provides theoretical knowledge on the main lines of modern narratology and its applications in literature and other texts (films, TV series, music and video clips, advertising, etc.) in a transnational and cross-media perspective. Students also acquire the critical skills and methodological tools necessary for the analysis and interpretation of these creative "products" in terms of their codes, technical aspects and strategies, as well as their aesthetic and socio-cultural results. In addition, the various case studies that will be discussed will allow not only to become aware of the contents but also to develop the autonomy of critical judgement.
Lectures and literature are in English; seminars in Dutch and English.
