Course goals

Students:
  • acquire knowledge of the history, literature, film, philosophy and linguistics of China;
  • acquire knowledge on the theoretical and methodological debates in the study of China;
  • are able to test general insights in specific cases in written form 

Content

The course offers a broad introduction to modern China. Students will acquire basic knowledge on modern Chinese history, from the last dynasties to the republic to the current age of the socialist market economy. The course pays attention to literature and cinema as key expressions of culture, as well as to philosophy and social media. Throughout the course, theoretical and methodological questions will be addressed concerning the study of China in a postcolonial and globalizing world.

If you have already completed this course, you may not take Modern China due to too much overlap in content.

Early Exit option for international exchange students (5 EC)
 
Exchange students who are required to return to their home university before January, are allowed to choose an Early Exit option for this course. The Early Exit option means that students can finish the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 EC for the course. Students must make arrangements with the course coordinator at the start of the course.
