Course goals

After finishing this course the successful students are able to:
  • reproduce the development of Latin in medieval Europe
  • to read, interprete and translate Latin source texts;
  • to use and apply the scholarly apparatus (grammar, dictionary);
  • to phrase acquired knowledge in written assignments.

Content

The course teaches the role of Latin as the most important language of communication in medieval Europe. The course traces the development of Latin in the former Roman provinces during the earlier Middle Ages (until c. 1000CE). We read source texts in Latin and partly also in translation that witness to these developments. Fixed part of the course pensum are Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica, Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae and the late eighth-century Carolingian edict De litteris colendis.
