Course goals

Students acquire knowledge and insight regarding the most important phenomena and theories on language acquisition and language structure.
They also learn to reflect on the methodological aspects of research in this field.

Content

One of the essential aspects of learning linguistics is the ability to devise and test hypotheses independently, whether they are language-theoretical or empirical. In this class, students will work in pairs to conduct a research project chosen from a list of topics that emerged from their reflections and class discussions on the hands-on work in the Community Engaged Learning (CEL) component of the course.

The course primarily focuses on expanding familiarity with linguistics as an exercise in language theory and development applied to concrete situations in second language acquisition. The central aim of this course is to train students in addressing concrete issues in language acquisition within multilingual contexts, using the tools provided by formal grammar.

Furthermore, students will reflect on how their linguistic expertise and empirical experience can contribute to discussions on societal issues related to language.

This course is the fourth course of the specialisation 'Language and cognition' in the BA Linguistics and 'Trans-Atlantische Perspectieven: Spanje en Latijns-Amerika A' in the BA Spanish Language and Culture.

Please note: the following students need to choose seminar group 3:
* students of the Spanish Language and Culture BA
* students TCS with hoofdrichting Moderne talen and kernpakket Spaans: Trans-Atlantische Perspectieven: Spanje en Latijns-Amerika

This course is equivalent to the following courses:

Language Acquisition-Structure (TW3V14204)
Forma, estructura y uso del español (SP3V14201)
Adquisición y didáctica del español (SP3V14203)

If you have already completed one of these courses, you may not take Language Acquisition-Structure due to too much overlap in content.

This course also includes a practical component of Community Engaged Learning (CEL).

Please note: for students of LAS and TCS that follow this course as part of the core subject block (kernpakket) of their specialization (hoofdrichting) there is an obligatory preparation. Information: https://tcs.sites.uu.nl/.
