Methods of Language Sciences

Course goals

Students will get an introduction into the variety of research methods that underpin the language sciences. Typical examples of the scientific cycle will be discussed and the practical methods and tools involved will be introduced. There will be particular attention to digital methods and tools applicable to various kinds of linguistic data. Students will become familiar with the R programming language for data analysis.

 

Content

This course provides an introduction to research methods in various corners of the language sciences. We will cover general methodologies, basic techniques and tools, and fundamental concepts and skills. There is particular focus is on managing and analysing linguistic and behavioural data. Part of the course is an introduction to R, a programming language for data analysis and statistical computing. Students will become familiar with different types of digital language resources and some of their uses in theoretical or experimental research.

Career orientation:
The skills learned in this course can be applied in employment in both academic and non-academic contexts, since they involve basic research skills. The programming component has even broader utility as it provides some basic skills for data science.
