Phonology and Fieldwork

Course goals

Students:

• Learn about foundations of phonological theory (representations, rules)
• Be able to apply phonological analysis to data
• Be able to elicit words and sentences from a speaker of a different language
• Be able to reflect on analysis and, under supervision, plan next elicitation sessions

Content

This course combines an introduction to phonological analysis, which is necessary for analyzing a hitherto unknown language, with the methodological component of acutally analyzing such a language. We will work with speakers of such languages to bring this into practice.
