Quantitative Analysis of Language Data

Course goals

Firstly, students gain advanced insight into the methodology of empirical quantitative research, following the course Methods and Statistics 1 (TW2V19002 or equivalent course).
Secondly, students gain in-depth insight into the background and applications of regression. Regression and covariance underlie concepts such as reliability and prediction, and various statistical techniques, including multiple regression, mixed-effects modeling (multilevel analysis), and logistic regression.
Thirdly, students learn to apply these statistical techniques for empirical research in the humanities.

Content

First, in this advanced course we will take a closer look at the methodological features of valuable scientific research, with regard to design, sampling, data collection, and analysis. Secondly, we will discuss regression and correlation in depth: How are they defined and how are they calculated? How do they play a role in reliability and predictions? Thirdly, you will gain insight into the theoretical background of various commonly used statistical techniques based on regression and correlation. We pay attention to, among other things, multiple regression, logistic regression and mixed-effects modeling (multilevel analysis). We also discuss the preconditions of these techniques and the validation of the results. Fourthly, you will learn to apply these regression techniques to both simulated data and real world (language) data obtained from human subjects. For this, we will use JASP, an open source statistical package with an intuitive interface. This course offers a thorough preparation for students who will carry out statistical analyses themselves during their BA or MA studies or afterwards.

This course is open to all students who are interested in methods of empirical research and quantitative data analysis, specifically the regression based techniques.
