Beschrijving

Course goals

In this course you will obtain:

ii) Knowledge of opportunities and limitations regarding the use of corpora in linguistics research;
iii) Familiarity with computational modeling techniques;
iv) Practical experience with computational methods for corpus data collection and analysis.

Content

In linguistics research there is a growing emphasis on the analysis of linguistic corpora and the computational modeling of language processes. In addition, computational skills are nowadays essential for linguistic data collection from corpora and experiments. This course introduces students to computational theories and applications in linguistics research, focusing on two main themes:

i)          Linguistic corpora (the use of corpora in different linguistic subfields; quantitative measurements)
ii)         Computational modeling (methodology, models of language acquisition and processing)

In the practical part of the course, students will acquire the necessary skills to engage in large-scale data collection and analysis using the programming language Python.

Additional information

This course is part of the specialisation 'Language and Computation'.

This course is equivalent to the following courses:
Taal en computer (TW3V18001)
Language and Computation (TW3V19002)

If you have already completed one of these courses, you may not take Linguistic Corpora and Computational Modeling due to too much overlap in content.
