Content
This is a mandatory course for students participating in UCINTDEV31. It is specially designed to prepare students for the issues and challenges confronted during the field course in Tanzania and Kenya, including their internships in the East Africa region. The course has a two-fold focus. First, it aims to provide students with a theoretical foundation in African Studies, including history, postcolonial theory, international political economy, and change in modern Africa. Concomitantly, the course offers a review of development theory, including deliberation on key contemporary challenges facing the African continent, and current approaches to redress them. The course takes a regional case study approach on development issues in Africa, with a focus especially on East Africa.
The course is designed in seminar format, with an emphasis on student participation and class discussion. It represents a rather intensive reading course wherein students are expected to effectively engage in the designated class themes. The course will include various media review, lectures, and guest talks; nevertheless, it will emphasize student-led discussion and presentations. One of the primary foci in the course is to provide a platform for students to identify, explore and articulate their selected internship topics. Accordingly, students are expected to identify, present and debate their topic via project proposals and corresponding presentations.
