Course goals

After completing the course, students are able to:
  1. explain how different livelihoods in East Africa shape development priorities and perspectives
  2. use different field methods of data collection that may be employed during the course of their internship
  3. begin building a contextualized foundation for their internship projects.

Content

This field course provides students with a first hand understanding of development and livelihood dynamics in East Africa. The program brings students into three different socio-cultural and ecological environments in the East African landscape: highland agricultural regions, semi-arid pastoral rangelands, and informal urban settlements. Homestay experiences, guest lectures, and field visits, integrate students into communities and offer them a unique perspective on livelihood dynamics and development issues. The course includes a special focus on inter-disciplinary field methods, preparing students for their internship experience. Students will engage with participant observation, semi-structured and structured interviewing techniques, focus group methods, survey instruments, mammal sampling strategies, and participatory mapping, among others.

Format
This course is a field course running for 4 weeks in June-July. It is a very intense period of exploration and study, demanding the full participation of students through the entire month.
