Inorganic and Organic Chemistry
Beschrijving
Course goals
- relate modern concepts of chemical bonding (e.g. molecular orbital theory, crystal and ligand field theory) to chemical reactivity. On the basis of such concepts students are able to (i) explain the structure and the physical and chemical properties of organic and inorganic compounds and (ii) apply these properties for the practical application of such materials.
- demonstrate the appropriate logical, critical, and communicative skills necessary for working as a scientist or for relating to the scientific community.
Relationship between tests and course goals:
In this course, the final course grade is based on four elements: two written exams, one presentation and class participation.
1. Mid-term written examination: this tests your knowledge of, and ability to apply the modern concepts of chemical bonding and reactivity in the field of inorganic chemistry (course goal 1).
2. End-of-term written examination: this tests your knowledge of, and ability to apply the modern concepts of chemical bonding and reactivity in the field of organic chemistry (course goal 1).
3. Oral presentation: this tests your ability to evaluate and present chemical knowledge in a socially relevant context (course goal 1 & 2).
4. Class participation: this tests your knowledge of, and ability to analyze and present chemical problems from both inorganic and organic chemistry (course goal 1 & 2)
Content
In this course, the structure and the physical and chemical properties of organic and inorganic compounds and materials are explained on the basis of modern concepts of bonding. Applications of practical relevance are discussed in the course.
Format
The course is divided in two main components: 1) Inorganic Chemistry (7 weeks), 2) Organic Chemistry (7 weeks). There is also time dedicated to presentations by students.
During this course the students can expect:
- Lectures and tutorials: In each class, the lecturer presents and discusses a topic with the students. To illustrate and demonstrate the theoretical concepts, representative exercises will be solved in class.
- Problem solving sessions: For each of the main areas, organic and inorganic chemistry, there are sessions devoted to problem solving. The aim is to allow students to individually test their understanding of the theory by considering typical problems.
- Presentation (15-20 minutes): Students (in pairs) select a group of the periodic system and discuss the general physical and chemical properties of the elements in this group. They also select one element from the group and explain how this element, or compounds containing it, is used in everyday life.
