Course goals
After completing the course, students are able to:
- Connect the practical execution of an inorganic chemical synthesis with the underlying theory.- Convert a description of an inorganic chemical synthesis in the literature into a concrete working plan.
- Execute this very working plan in a successful, safe and responsible way.
- Establish the identity, purity and characteristics of the isolated product with spectroscopic methods.
- Write a report about the conducted experiment.
Content
This module makes the practical part of the UU course SK-BANV13 accessible to UCU students. It is meant for students who want to follow a chemistry track and want to improve their experimental inorganic chemical skills. The students perform 2 or 3 inorganic syntheses (depending on the number of students enrolled), which involve advanced laboratory techniques like working under highly controlled conditions and working with hazardous chemicals. Furthermore, students learn how to convert literature procedures into their own synthesis plan, how to isolate and purify a reaction product and how to characterize it. Scientific reporting also forms part of the course.
This course prepares students better for UCSCICHET1 Science Research Thesis -Chemistry, and will also be helpful in UCSCICHE31 Chemistry for Sustainability.
Schedule: the last weeks of period 3 at UU (from the 3rd week in March until the 2nd week of April) which coincides with the UCU spring period. As 2.5 consecutive days are required to perform an experiment, the inorganic lab course is likely to overlap with courses at UCU that the students follow. The lab organization of the Chemistry department is however rather flexible in allocating time slots for students, so that tailor-made schedules can be arranged for UCU students.
Attendance
Due to the short duration and intensive nature of the lab course, 100% attendance is required.
