Course goals

After completing the course, students are able to:
1. Conduct a (simple) organic synthesis
2. Apply isolation and purification techniques like filtration, recrystallization and distillation
3. Use chromatographic separation techniques
4. Characterize reaction products by spectroscopic techniques
5. Set up a method of measurement
6. Collect reliable data and process and interpret these data
7. Work safely and responsibly in a chemical laboratory
8. Connect experiment with theory
9. Keep a laboratory notebook
10. Write a report about a chemical experiment

Content

Chemistry is an experimental science. Virtually all knowledge and insights have been obtained by careful experimentation and the subsequent interpretation of results. As of today, chemical research still predominantly occurs in the laboratory. Any student following a chemistry track should therefore have experience with experimental chemistry, and should possess at least basic experimental skills.
In this course students are introduced to experimental skills and competences that they need when working in a chemical laboratory. These include the execution of (organic) syntheses, the characterization of reaction products, the performance of measurements and the use of scientific equipment to gather research data. The ability to work safely and in a responsible way in a chemical laboratory and scientific reporting also form part of these competences. In addition, students learn about the principles and application of techniques which are used for the separation and/or characterization of compounds. After following this course, the student has gained a deeper understanding how matter behaves and is well equipped to follow more advanced chemical lab courses or can contribute to the work in a research lab.

Format
This course consists of the following activities:
- Lectures on separation methods (gas chromatography) and spectroscopic techniques (infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy).
- Self-study on the same separation and spectroscopic techniques.
- Experiments: Two organic syntheses; Gas chromatography experiment; Determination of the rate constant of a chemical reaction

The experiments make up about 60 % of the available time In the first week of the course students will be introduced to basic lab techniques and the theory behind separation and spectroscopic characterization techniques, which are then applied in a small research-like project in the second week.

Attendance
Due to the short duration and intensive nature of the lab course, 100% attendance is required.
