Course goals

Main objective: This course discusses and explains different disease mechanisms based on the anatomical and (patho)physiologic principles of human organ systems and these will be applied to analyze various clinical cases as well as demonstrating clinical reasoning.

After completing this course students are able to:
  1. Integrate and apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to explain health and disease across major organ systems.
  2. Analyze and interpret clinical signs and symptoms in case studies by linking them to underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.
  3. Formulate and justify a diagnosis in clinical case studies using structured clinical reasoning.
  4. Critically analyze how social and structural determinants of health shape disease presentation and outcomes
Relationship between assessment and learning goals:
  1. Written knowledge-based assessments 1 and 2: to test your knowledge and ability to discuss and analyze, anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of diseases.
  2. Written in-class essay: to test your analytical, critical thinking and reasoning skills related to a actual health-care related topic, including the incorporation of ethical, moral, legal, global and public health arguments (course goal 4)
  3. Presentation in-class on anatomical, and physiological aspects of a major organ system of the human body and mechanisms of human diseases (course goals 1 to 3)

Content

This course examines the relation between the normal functioning (physiology) and disease (pathophysiology) of basic organ systems:
  • Heart and blood vessels
  • Kidneys and the urinary tract
  • Upper, lower airways and the lungs
  • Gastrointestinal tract
  • Endocrine glands

Format
This course will consist of interactive lectures, student presentations on anatomy, physiology and pathology, case studies or patient demonstrations, and assignments. Students are expected to spend about ten hours per week on the course outside of class and complete their readings before class. Students are highly encouraged to contribute actively to class discussion and activities
