Beschrijving

Course goals

- Identifying Europe’s internal forms of colonial/postcolonial relations and recognizing current colonial and imperialist norms in discourse, media and social relations.
- Recognizing and employing different postcolonial analytical tools in social, cultural and political domains.
- Develop skills in order to carry out research using textual, media and discourse analysis.

Content

This course engages with postcolonial and decolonial theories in the discussion of topics such as borders, memory, identity, ethnicity, migration, nationalism, racism, xenophobia and the production, representation and perpetuation of otherness. The course thereby critically deconstructs and analyses the notions of Europe and European identity.  The course takes an intersectional perspective by relying on insights coming from adjacent critical fields of studies such as gender studies, media studies, literary studies, religious studies, and migration studies, among others. This engagement is accomplished through the presence of various invited guest speakers who will approach the topics from their disciplinary perspectives and research trajectories.

This course  is part of the the minor Postcolonial Studies. For more information about this minor see: Postcolonial studies.

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major (hoofdrichting Postcolonial and Gender Studies) are required to complete one of the following compulsory preparation courses: Introduction to Gender Studies (block 3), Gender, intersectionaliteit en cultuurkritiek (blok 1) or Gender, Intersectionality and Cultural Critique (blok 1).
